Teach-yourself materials
|
If you studied Russian once and want to refresh your skills or study it
currently profit of the materials I prepare for my students as a practicing
teacher. I specially recommend you to check this page in case you will have
your exam in the near future.
I do not fancy any of the Russian language textbook I ever seen - published
in USA, Great Britain or Russia. You know why? Because they do not provide
ANY information about the current life in this country. Recently Russian
society survived dramatic changes; new social classes got formed, others
disappeared; old values got revised and new ones are in testing; the behavior
rules changed; people react on all of that differently, some with enthusiasm,
others with pain. Yet none of this can be found in the textbooks I happened
to see.
I offer you the videotapes with the Russian talk shows which
under my private opinion reflect the current Russian culture and society
reaction on what it happening with the country. Watching them you will
| – |
develop your ability to grasp by ear the conversation of Russian
native speakers,
|
| – |
hear the discussions on the topics which worry or inspire today
Russian society,
|
| – |
better understand why Russians act as they do, what are the values,
principles, views they base on.
|
I am sure that learning the foreign language should go hand in hand with the
learning of the country's life. When you will listen to the Russians - what do
they think and how do they feel about today world and today Russia - you will
progress both in your language skills and in understanding what Russians are like.
Your Russian language teacher or Russian friends will be impressed by your
knowledge of Russian reality.
I also offer you the books for the vocabulary developing. With
all my esteem to Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and other famous Russian classics I do not
think that it is a good idea to start reading in Russian from their famous novels.
They lived more than a century ago. People do not speak the way these books are
written. Besides if you will quickly get bored with too complicated book its
reading will not be of big use. I recommend you the recently written fiction -
detective stories which characters live and act in today Russian reality. Neither
the authors names nor the book titles will tell you a thing but believe me - these
softbacks are the best vocabulary source if you want to speak like St. Petersburg
or Moscow dweller.
I can also send you a Russian grammar reference book covering the
whole Russian grammar with the explications in English and exercises on
every topic with the keys. It is not perfect but it is much better than
any book of this type printed in USA or Europe I happened to see.
