Inzhenerny castle
Very likely one of St. Petersburg's most mysterious places. The castle was built
in 1797-1800 by order of the Emperor Paul I. The Emperor was anticipating a
conspiracy against him and was scared for his life. That is why the castle
initially featured numerous corridors, levels and rooms, and was surrounded by
a moat. In spite of his precautions, Paul I's sojourn in his new castle did not
last long. Soon after moving in he was assassinated by conspirators, including
his own son. Unfortunately, the original building with its multiple labyrinthine,
is lost to us. However, what remains of the building's initial gloominess and
mysteriousness is still sufficiently depressing.
