Helsinki - St. Petersburg

By train

There are 2 trains daily:
 –  Nr. 35 Sibelius
Departure from Helsinki - 7:42
Arrival to St. Petersburg - 14:23
Journey time - 5 hours 41 min.
 –  Nr. 33 Repin
Departure from Helsinki - 15:42
Arrival to St. Petersburg - 22:25
Journey time - 5 hours 43 min.
A short trip, so both trains consist of only sitting cars.
A one way ticket costs about 50 Euro (66 USD), round trip will cost you double.
You can book via Internet - in the upper corner you can choose English language).
But do not worry much about it - it is easy to get a ticket even during the peak of high season.

By bus

The cheapest way to reach St. Petersburg from Helsinki is to go by bus.
The ticket will cost you from 15 to 30 Euro depending on the company you take. Buses operated by Russians are the cheapest. They leave daily close to Kamppi metro station. One way will cost you about 15-20 Euro - you can even bargain with the driver.
The trip lasts about 8 hours. There are several overnight buses which depart about 23:00 and arrive to St. Petersburg about 8:00 in the morning.
Pohjolan Liikenne bus company operates the route Turku - Helsinki - St. Petersburg with the Russian SovAuto. The bus departs from Turku harbour daily at 8:45 and from Helsinki bus station at noon (arrival in St. Petersburg at 21:00).

By plane

The quickest way is certainly by plane.
As the distance is only 456 km, the flight takes less than an hour. But the standard price is about 300 Euro one way. Promotional offers happen from time to time but you can hardly hope for less that 150 Euro for a one way ticket.

Tatiana's advice

If 50 Euro for the trip is an affordable price for you - take the train. Considering all options it is the best ratio of price/comfort. Although most people prefer Sibelius train, I would recommend the Repin. When you arrive to St. Petersburg by Sibelius at 14:23 it is neither fish nor fowl: too late for sightseeing, too early to go to bed (considering that first you will have to reach your place, take a shower, eat something and only then start exploring the city). When you arrive on the Repin you will reach your place, have a good night sleep and start your acquaintance with the city in the morning. You will be fresh, everything will be open and it will be a much better start than in the evening after a 6 hour train trip. If you do not feel safe and secure at night in a strange city - order a pick up. I will gladly meet you and safely drive you to your place.
