Menshikov palace

Menshikov palace This palace is the unique example of a private house of the first quarter of the 18th century preserved till our days, where great banquets and official receptions took place. It belonged to Prince Alexander Menshikov - the closest aid and personal friend of Peter the Great. He also was the first governor-general of St. Petersburg and did much for its development.

In 1727 in a struggle for power, Menshikov lost and was sent to Siberia. Since then the Cadet corps has been situated in the palace. Now "The Menshikov palace-museum" is a branch of The State Hermitage.
