The cathedral - a masterpiece of early XIXth century Russian architecture - was
built by Andrey Voronikhin taking ten years to construct. The building stands with
its north facade facing Nevsky prospect.
The various bronze sculptures in the alcoves of the northern portico include
statues of Alexander Nevsky, John the Baptist, Andrey Pervozvanny.
The internal ornamentation of the cathedral is very impressive: 56 monolithic
columns of pink Finnish granite and mosaic floor of coloured marble give the
cathedral the appearance of a palace designed for state receptions and society
balls.
