Medical emergencies - or what to do in such cases
|
As a private guide I do undertake all the responsibility for the well-being of
my clients including offering assistance in medical emergencies if needed. But
what to do if you have nobody local who could take care of you? The purpose of
this article is to provide the general information about the matter as well as
some specific advice what to do in certain situations. It was written thanks to
the suggestion of the site visitor Randy Crowder.
I know at least one full-equipped clinic in St. Petersburg who accepts foreign
insurance policies. It is called Euromed, and you can check their site
If you already have an insurance policy, check if it is on their list.
There are some more medical institutions which consider foreign citizens
(tourists or businessmen) as potential clients. Here are some more links:
In reality they are more numerous - just not every one has an Internet site.
But let us imagine the real situation: you are in St. Petersburg and suddenly
walking on the street, you feel sick. What to do?
Step 1
If you are in the city center - try to reach any of four 5 stars hotels
(Astoria, Europe, Nevsky Palace, Radisson). They are centrally located, easy to
find and every one has in a staff 24-hours doctor who can offer you the first
help as well as organize the rest.
Step 2
In case you are alone (i.e. no English-speaking guide like me accompanies you)
you have no choice but to go to the clinic with English-speaking staff. Here
are some local telephone numbers of them:

I can not share my personal impression about these as I never used them but I
can say what I heard from some of my rich friends: the service is as high as
the prices.
Certainly you can agree all the financial terms on the phone before taking any
service.
Step 3
Today most of regular Russian hospitals and clinics offer their services for
anybody who is ready to pay them. If you are accompanied by some local guide
you usually have a choice: to use the service of the clinic very similar to
that one you have at home and to pay much or to use the local doctor (clinic)
whom your guide will recommend to you and pay 10 times less. That is
especially true for dentist service.
|
What shall I do in similar case myself?
If any of my clients will feel sick, then:
Step 1
I will pick up my mobile phone and contact some of my relatives - professional
doctors in order to learn:
| – |
What do these symptoms most probably mean?
|
| – |
Where should I better bring my client and what doctor should I ask
for?
|
Step 2
I will bring my client to the recommended place and interpret all the discussions
with the doctor until he (she) gives his (her) diagnosis and instructions.

Dear Tatiana,
I was very interested to read your article regarding medical care for foreigners in
St. Petersburg. I am the General Director of the British American Clinic and I wanted
to give you some feedback on this article:
-
We offer direct insurance billing with all international insurance companies
that allow for this service. Euromed is not alone in this service.
-
Most foreign travelers have insurance and, as a result, will pay nothing for
medical services that they receive abroad. As a result, price is much less of
a consideration than the quality of medical service provided.
-
We offer the city's only Australian, British and American Doctors who work
daily in our clinic.
-
We have a website!
www.british-americanclinic.com
Thanks for your time and consideration. We do appreciate the fact that you have listed
us on your website.
Regards,
Kurt Stahl

British American Clinic
