Apartment rent: advices and warnings

If you are going to rent an apartment via Internet, consider some advices/warnings from the old stager in this business:
 –  When you browse Internet and check the apartments listings most of them look perfect. But they are not. Apartments are like people - they can be very nice but almost never perfect. At least ask the person you are going to rent from what under his personal opinion is negative about this place to get more realistic picture.
 –  When you check the photos remember that they can deceive. In reality the place can look as it is on the pictures, better or worse. The problem is that the photos do not show the details which you feel distinctly when you enter the apartment. Old doors and kitchen gas stove, dirty floors, old bed (i.e. without proper mattress), street noise - all this and more can not be distinctly seen on the photos. But they matter.
 –  Do not rely much on the comfort level indicated by the real estate agency. I check sometimes the other sites: many apartments I know are overestimated. The one who sells is interested in the highest possible level - remember that when you see 4 or 5 stars.
 –  Better deal with private guides who offer the apartments than with the real estate agencies. The difference is that the agency representative meets you once for 10 min to get the balance of the bill and never sees you again. Guides on the contrary often both accommodate people and work with them. I would not put my client in a bad place at least because I would not want to feel his/her disappointment within next several days. :-)
 –  If you are going to rent a place for more than €150/night you do not risk. You should be careful with the cheaper places. I would not recommend you to take anything (even tiny studio) for less than €50/night. Decent places for cheaper price are very RARE. I have checked more than a dozen of variants but offer only 1 such apartment. Usually low price means one of the following:
 –  The location of the apartment is not good. St. Petersburg is 5 million population city so too large area can be recognized as "center". Often it is quicker to reach the city sights from the bedroom community than from the certain centrally located addresses.
 –  The furniture is old and the place is dirty.
 –  The apartment surroundings are scaring (i.e. for example a scrap-heap and garbage around in the inner yard you need to pass to enter the building).
 –  I would advise you to avoid the apartments with the addresses around Ligovsky prospect. It is pretty close to Nevsky but the district is bad.
 –  Etc.
If you are on budget - go for B&B or homestay instead of renting a fishily cheap apartment (check variants here).
